For most of us, the internet is virtual, made of Instagram posts, emails and YouTube videos. And, access to the vital utility isn’t guaranteed across the world. Glad You Asked host Cleo Abram wants to know: What is the internet actually made of? And, how does it work? Answering that question involves discovering how internet cables are laid in the sea, if 5G is really the future, and how balloons in the stratosphere are helping people connect.Key Sources: Submarine Cable Map – https://www.submarinecablemap.com/Code, Charles Petzold – https://www.amazon.com/Code-Language-Computer-Hardware-Software/dp/0735611319Tubes, by Andrew Blum – https://www.amazon.com/Tubes-Journey-Internet-Andrew-Blum/dp/0061994952Internet Cable Protection Committee Report – https://cdn.arstechnica.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/ICPC-sharks.pdfPew Internet Fact Sheet – https://www.pewinternet.org/fact-sheet/internet-broadband/How Does The Internet Work? – https://web.stanford.edu/class/msande91si/www-spr04/readings/week1/InternetWhitepaper.htmBasic Radio Theory and Introduction to Radio Systems – https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/B9781597497312000028Federal Communications Commission Broadband Map – https://broadbandmap.fcc.gov/#/InterTubes: A Study of the US Long-haul Fiber-optic Infrastructure, SIGCOMM – http://pages.cs.wisc.edu/~pb/tubes_final.pdfRural Broadband Economics: A Review of Rural Subsidies, COSTQUEST – https://www.ntca.org/sites/default/files/documents/2018-07/CQA-RuralBroadbandEconomics-AReviewofRuralSubsidies_FinalV07112018.pdfWorldwide Broadband Pricing, Cable – https://www.cable.co.uk/broadband/pricing/worldwide-comparison/Exploring the Relationship Between Broadband and Economic Growth, World Bank – http://pubdocs.worldbank.org/en/391452529895999/WDR16-BP-Exploring-the-Relationship-between-Broadband-and-Economic-Growth-Minges.pdf0:00 Intro 1:10 How Does The Internet Work? 3:37 Finding The Internet 6:43 An Internet Hub 8:45 The Internet Backbone 14:03 Greater Web Access

  1. I’ve just seen this documentary and I have to say, like somebody who knows NOTHING about engineering (is that the word? sorry, I’m not native speaker), that Im really really IMPRESSED about this. I thought that.. I don’t know, but this is really amazing. Now I know how this everyday thing works and I feel really nerd about it haha

  2. Nice illustration.
You should’ve also included more on the fact that satellites communication provides quite a load for customers several decades now. Satellites beam down info to substations, which go out to various regions, then to homes.

  3. i work as a permit coordinator to place fiber optic cable (or replacing/overlashing on old copper cables) so this was cool to watch to feed onto what i already knew ☺️
